Tips for Saving Money Over the Summer

Summer can be an expensive time of year. It is no comparison to the holidays but things can really add up. Having your kids home from school can sometimes mean extra services needed, more entertainment, or daily camps. If you have friends like mine, summer time can also mean BBQ’s, bridal showers, weddings, baby showers, birthdays, and other occasions that seem to be so much more fun in the summer but that can really add up when it comes to getting there and gifts. Having a good time during the warmer months does not have to mean breaking the bank. Even though we cannot reduce the cost of your electric bill due to your air conditioner, hopefully we can help you come up with a few ways to save money in other areas of your life.

Get Outside More

Summer can be a great time to explore your local parks and other outdoor destinations. One of my favorite things about the warmer months is the ability to hike whenever you want. Even if you are not into more physical outdoor activities, you can save money by spending the afternoon doing something free like playing catch, rollerblading, or having a picnic in the park. You may be more of a homebody, in which case gardening could be a great activity for you whether it is a solo activity, or something you can have your kids join you in. Even if you don’t have the space to plant anything in the ground, you can always choose to go for big planters or window boxes for an even smaller option.

Look for Summer Sales

Some of the biggest times of year for shopping are around back to school time at the end of the summer, and during the holidays when everyone is buying gifts for their loved ones. It makes sense that during a time of year that may otherwise be pretty slow for stores, they begin to offer summer blow out sales. This not only gets their numbers up, but it also helps rid them of inventory from last season, in preparation for the two big bursts of shopping that will happen in the coming months. So instead of heading straight to your favorite big box store to buy your kids some toys, check for sales from nicer retailers like the Disney Store. Products from a brand name retailer will last longer and function better than cheaply made toys that are always sold at a discount.

Travel Off Season

Many destinations that are highly priced and full of tourists during the cooler months, can be enjoyed at a much lower price during the warmer months, which is essentially the off season for anywhere south of the border. Take advantage of the discounted rates for everything from airfare to accommodations and take yourself on a vacation to Mexico, or book a Caribbean getaway for the whole family. There are so many discount travel websites out there that will help you find the best possible deal for you, and whoever you chose to enjoy your time with.
